THE SAAS MODEL – KEEP IT RUNNING

I’ve picked up stakes and moved to a new gig, where I’m seeing the power of the Software as a Service model.

Yes, it’s true. I’ve left the challenging world of Health Care Clinical Applications for the heady frontiers of SAAS, applications delivered right to your browser without muss, fuss or your own infrastructure. It’s a whole ‘nother world, and I’ll pass on what I’ve learned so far.

My apologies for missing many posts, but the turmoil of deciding to make the move, wrapping up my projects in an orderly fashion, and entering the new organization have been all-consuming. I made the move for the usual reasons – an old friend needed help, and made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse. The fact that my commute shrank from 2 and a half hours to 12 minutes is a bonus.

Hopefully I’m back on track, and can continue to bring you the entertaining and insightful commentary that you have come to look forward to these past three years or so.

And I’ve got a good bit to pass on – how the software delivery model is very different when you don’t need to install, but when 1,000 plus customers are all using the same code at the same time.

My new organization provides a niche Human Resources Management application to a well-defined US national market, with some footholds in the UK and Australia. The current customer base is approaching 1,000.

The first thing that is very different about the SAAS model of application delivery is the strength of the Value proposition. This niche market was transformed by the sophistication and feature set of applications that can be delivered at a very low per seat price. A thousand customers, hundreds of thousands of users, and it all runs on the same set of hardware. Of course, you do have to keep that hardware and application set up and running…
